History of the Cooperative
The Wayfarer building was constructed in 1923 in the period brick box style, and is one of only a few such examples remaining in Seattle. The brick facade and other architectural details have been maintained throughout the years. For this reason, the Wayfarer has been designated a Historical Site by the City of Seattle.
In 1951, a group of University District residents formed the Wayfarer Cooperative, Inc., and purchased the building.
